Plaza de la Villa: the appointment with the stone

The square of Alpedrete town smells of history, of the stone that gives the town its name and of Herrerian style. Its two most emblematic buildings are the Town Hall, with its straight Escorial-style lines, and the Asunción de Nuestra Señora Church, which has the durable style of fortress-churches that were so abundant in nearby Castile.

 Both buildings were erected on the ruins of the old Palace of the Counts of Adanero and it is believed that the church comes from the previous chapel of the Palace. Nowadays these building traditions are a central part of the refined stonework that is the traditional trade of the municipality. Apart from them, another unique feature of the architecture in the Sierra de Guadarrama region is noticeable in the slate roof of the Town Hall.

 Inside and outside the church-fortress different architectural styles can be admired. Incorporated layer by layer, they help us read its history. We can observe these styles, from the Romanesque to the Visigoth, Gothic-Isabelline, Mudejar and Herrerian one and even the recent refurbishments; they make this building a living one. Inside, one gets surprised by the strength of the baptismal font and of the spiral staircase, both carved in stone.
