Mendoza Castle

Calle del Castillo, s/n. Manzanares El Real.

This building and the old castle that preceded it witnessed the hunts carried out by the kings of Castile in the huge territory of the Real de Manzanares, where deer, wild boars and bears were common game animals; a privileged natural space that through the centuries was included into various municipalities that nowadays form the Sierra de Guadarrama.

The Castle was commissioned by Don Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, I Duke of Infantado, around 1475; it replaced the “old” castle, a simpler one, located on the other side of the town of Manzanares el Real. This initial castle worth paying a visit if it is a guided one.

the participation of Juan Guas, master of stonework and architect of the Catholic Monarchs to the construction of the new castle of the Mendoza family was crucial. He was the author of the Gothic details of the coronation and the interior of the castle, especially the southern gallery and the porticoed courtyard, which was large at the time. The castle also has a church with three naves.

Various public activities held in the castle make seeing these spaces and treasures possible to everyone.
