Sierra de Hoyo Beekeeping Classroom Centre

The Sierra de Hoyo Beekeeping Classroom is a pioneering centre in its field within the Community of Madrid. It is designed to offer visitors activities in the heart of nature. These activities primarily focus on the honeybee, although other topics are also explored. The centre is particularly aimed at groups, including schools, associations, and families. Activities range from guided tours of the facilities to workshops on various themes, summer schools, and “No School Days”. The Sierra de Hoyo Beekeeping Classroom is located within a stunning 260-hectare Natural Reserve in Hoyo de Manzanares.

While the main focus of the Sierra de Hoyo Beekeeping Classroom, as the name suggests, is the honeybee and beekeeping, the topics covered are deeply connected to the surrounding environment. This allows visitors to learn about and appreciate the local ecosystem. Flora and forest management, wildlife, geology, and traditional mountain practices are part of the content and activities offered.

The facilities of the Sierra de Hoyo Beekeeping Classroom combine indoor and outdoor spaces. The central building houses the Educational Classroom for courses, talks, and workshops, as well as the Beekeeping Museum, which holds an extensive collection of beekeeping materials from various times and regions and is part of Spain’s Network of Beekeeping Museums. There is also a Honey Packaging Room. Surrounding the Classroom, the site covers around 4 hectares, including the Thematic Trail, a 1.5 km circular route providing information about bees, local wildlife, flora, traditional uses, and geology; the Melliferous Flora Garden; the Forest Pollination Station; the School Garden; a showcase of farm animals; and, a main attraction for many visitors, the Educational Apiary.

In the Educational Apiary, visitors, fully equipped with protective suits, can join a guided tour of the beehives, inspecting the interior of the hives and observing live beekeeping activities explained during the apicultural walk.

The centre also collaborates with several conservation organisations on activities related to the preservation of local wildlife.
