Madrid’s Camino to Santiago de Compostela
En Español >

Starting at the capital city of Spain, you can also walk the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela and enjoy the famous Camino de Santiago, instead of starting by the Pyrenees. Madrid’s Camino was recovered in 1993 and links with the Camino Francés in Sahagún, León province. The Madrid Camino is not an official path but it does indeed make possible to pilgrims from Madrid to get close in a safe way (as it has six hostels and 11 reception points) up to the town in León.

The Camino Madrileño goes along some towns of the district such as Manzanares El Real, Mataelpino, Navacerrada and Cercedilla and crosses over the impressive Sierra de Guadarrama through the Puerto de la Fuenfría (Fuenfría Pass). Since you may leave from the city of Madrid, it is possible to view the typical landscapes and fauna from the Central Plateau, Castilian countryside and from the mountains. Over this, we must point out the architectural elements and secular patrimony samples as churches, bridges, Roman ways, fountains, stone constructions... Over all, there are 321 km (about 200 miles) of contact with nature, reflection, sharing the way and the experiences of devotion, of living, and why not, of suffering before reaching the goal of the first stage: Sahagún and the connection to the Camino Francés.

The Camino Francés or French Way is one of the eight itineraries that starting in Spain, Europe or even from the sea, lead pilgrims to Saint Jacques tomb, in the magnificent Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Since you arrive to Sahagún, the walker still has ahead 15 stages and 331 kilometers (206 miles) to go on before reaching the final destination.

The main routes of the Camino de Santiago were proclaimed as the first European Cultural itinerary by the Council of Europe in 1987 and UNESCO has considered the route along France and Spain a World Heritage Property.
